About the annapolis valley ballooning team

J.P. Lemaire found ballooning in 1998 when he joined Skyview Ballooning in Ottawa as ground crew. It was then he discovered his passion for ballooning and he began trading his crew wage for time in the air and gained his commercial pilot’s license in 1999. J.P. quickly turned his love of balloons into a career and has since earned over two thousand hours as pilot-in-command in different cities across Canada and the U.S. Most recently, J.P. spent twelve years flying a sixteen-passenger balloon over the amazing wildlife of the Masai Mara, Kenya.

A father of three sons, J.P. returned to Canada from Kenya in October 2016 to enable his boys to experience growing up in idyllic Nova Scotia. He opened Annapolis Valley Ballooning with his wife, Terilyn, as is excited to bring his experience and his love of ballooning to the Annapolis Valley.

Terilyn was introduced to ballooning (and J.P.!) in 2003 when she took a job as a hostess with Skyview Ballooning. Since then she’s logged over 300 hours in J.P.’s basket and has learned the ins and outs of the ballooning business in several different countries. Terilyn spends her days with her sons and with her camera as a wedding photographer. She manages Annapolis Valley Ballooning’s bookings and works to keep things running smoothly behind the scenes and on the ground.

Launch site

Your Annapolis Valley Ballooning adventure begins with a short drive to your launch site. This launch site is determined by your pilot and depends on the wind speed and direction. We have over a dozen launch sites to choose from in the Annapolis Valley area. This is a great opportunity to get to know your flight team and ask them any questions you may have.

Before take-off

It only takes around twenty minutes for your balloon to be inflated and standing upright, ready for boarding. You are welcome to help with the setup of the balloon or simply stand back and take photos as your aircraft takes shape and comes to life.

The flight

As the sun rises or sets you will rise into the sky in your colourful hot air balloon. Your balloon will float gently along with the breeze. In your basket, you will feel completely secure with virtually no sensation of movement. During your flight you may find yourself drifting just above the treetops then, moments later, effortlessly ascending to heights of 2000 feet or more. Make sure you have your camera ready to capture views of the Annapolis Valley from a perspective like no other!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we fly?

We fly over the beautiful Annapolis Valley, renowned for its vineyards and wineries. We will take in views of Cape Split and the Minas Basin as we ascend.

Where do we meet?

We meet at the Irving Oil Big Stop in New Minas. The address is 5477 Prospect Rd. It is exit 12 off the 101 highway.

What time do we fly?

Hot air balloons fly when winds are at their most stable, usually shortly after sunrise or a few hours before sunset. This is because the heating and cooling of the earth during the day creates thermal winds, which make conditions unsuitable. We meet thirty minutes before official sunrise and two hours before official sunset. Your pilot will notify you of the exact meeting time when he calls the day before to confirm your flight status and the day's weather.

How long is the flight?

When the winds are light, we fly for one hour. Unfortunately when the winds are breezier, the topography of the valley limits us to approximately forty-five minutes.

How high will we go?

Flights range from tree-top level up to five thousand feet.

What should we wear?

Please wear casual, comfortable clothing. Solid, flat footwear is essential (no high heels or sandals please). It’s no colder in the air than on the ground but you will be outdoors for up to three hours, so dress for the temperature of the day. Please carry a hat to help deflect heat from the burners.

What is ideal ballooning weather?

Hot air balloon flights take place in winds less than ten knots, with no rain or approaching storms in the immediate area. Flights also require visibility of at least four kilometres.

Will it be cold in the air?

The temperature in the air will be nearly the same temperature as on the ground. We do not go high enough to feel any significant change in temperature.

Is hot air ballooning safe?

Canadian hot air balloons are registered aircraft and are regulated by Transport Canada under the Canadian Aviation Regulations. It is one of the safest forms of aviation and serious accidents are extremely rare. Please see Transport Canada's 'Hot Air Balloons - A Passenger's Guide' for more info.
